After months of speculation, HBO executives have confirmed a “Sex and the City” sequel is in the works.
While there isn't an official deal yet, Michael Lombardo, HBO president of programming, told reporters at the TCA press tour, “There is enormous interest to do another ‘Sex and the City.’ In fact, they're trying to put that together now.”
You knew it was coming, since the big-screen adventures of the Fab Four have pulled in $132 million so far. Says Lombardo, “Everybody associated with that project was really heartened by the enthusiasm from fans.”
So what about a film revival of HBO’s other landmark series?
HBO co-president Richard Plepler says of the chances for a “Sopranos” film: “If David Chase [the series creator] wants to do it, we'd be delighted to explore that, absolutely.”
And with the cancellation of David Milch’s “John from Cincinnati,” it would seem he’d have some free time to return to his wild western masterpiece for those two mythical “Deadwood” movies, right?
Yes, it was asked, and yes, the answer is still the same: “Deadwood” is dead.
Plepler announced that “David is working on a pilot called ‘Last of the Ninth’ about a 1970s New York City Police Department. I think it's safe to report to you that the likelihood of a ‘Deadwood’ movie happening is slim to none.”
As for the other series missing from HBO’s schedule, Lombardo cites writers-strike fallout: “We got pushed back literally four months on everything.”
“Entourage” and “Big Love” will be back in the fall.
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” was not the result of the strike, however. “It was just Larry's schedule,” says Lombardo. “He happens to be acting in a Woody Allen movie right now. He plans to get back to the show [after that]. So hopefully at the end of next year, we'll be back with ‘Curb’ [Season 7, 10 episodes].”
Click here to comment: Should Sarah Jessica Parker and the gang test their luck and do another film? Do you want to see "The Sopranos" on the big screen? Do you still long for "Deadwood"? And who else is in "Curb" withdrawal???
