Stepping into Gil Grissom’s shoes will be no easy task. That might explain why CBS is going in an unexpected direction with the new character who will be filling the void when William Petersen checks out in episode 10 of the upcoming ninth season of "CSI."

CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler dished some tidbits about the show’s changes while addressing reporters at the TV critics press tour.

“They've created a great character. He's a doctor, a scientist who's got a very interesting DNA that is going to inform the duality of the character.”

She went on to say, “He is an outsider coming into the CSI unit...He has an interesting genetic profile that in certain medical contexts, they've noticed many times that serial killers have the same genetic profile. And this gentleman knows this about himself and is sort of on this journey -- to discover who his true character will ultimately become.”

What is this, "Silence of the Lambs" meets "Dexter"?

Tassler promises, “They have an unbelievable season planned. We're starting certainly with the resolution of the cliffhanger. Jorja Fox is coming back [for the first three episodes]. We've got an unbelievable -- I call it the DVR-proof season of "CSI."

For anyone worried this will cause a "CSI" ratings cliff dive, Tassler was quick to remind the room of Mandy Patinkin’s departure from “Criminal Minds” last season. “We added Joe Mantegna, and the show came back better and stronger than ever.”

CBS says an "actor of stature" will be cast, and while they wouldn’t say who they were looking at, some of the names being tossed around the gossip mill are John Malkovich and Laurence Fishburne.

I think the cast who is still left have been developing their own interesting characteristics. I will continue to watch the show with just as much interest as before. I really liked Liev Schreiber's character and wish he would be willing to fill in for Grissom again.

body I liked Liev Schreiber's character too ... I like him as an actor; too bad they killed off his character so that they're isn't a chance of him coming back. I like Laurence Fishburn, so I'd be glad to see what he could bring to the cast of CSI. Let's see Morpheus in something on small screen!

body i like Grisim he adds a mystery to his role, but the show is what it is all about with all the cast. I will still watch it and hope that the chemestry will work out. times change and so do the cast ... look at how long some of the soaps have been on and how the cast has changed over the years and they are still being watched.

body Did Schreiber actually die in that last show? I know he was being carted away in an ambulance and they shook their heads and such, but did it actually say he died?

body Grissom IS the show - but although I used to love CSI I rarely watch it anymore. CSI jumped the shark when Grissom started sleeping with a co-worker. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I was hopeful things would get back on track once Jorja Fox left, but guess not.

body Sometimes messing with a good thing (in this case, GREAT thing... none of the other CSIs ever lived up to the original) like replacing your lead actor isn't a good thing, regardless of the fanfare. Viewers like me won't watch anymore, esp. when more than 1/2 your (original) cast is gone. Such a shame...

body I will miss Grissom but will continue watching---as long as the DON'T turn it into a CSI Miami. I can't stand that show and hate it's related to our CSI Las Vegas.
