Is it worth hauling yourself off the couch to get to the movie theater this week? Or are your efforts better spent staying at home, popping some corn, and watching something On Demand? Let’s find out.
What's On Demand?
That's a lot of red corn syrup! It's a big week for slasher and horror flicks On Demand. Marcus Nispel and Michael Bay's remake of "Friday the 13th" airs in HD, so you can see each blood splatter and clueless busty babe in lifelike detail. If you get tired of Jason's antics, switch over to the remake of "My Bloody Valentine," which is available in 3-D. (Pick up your 3D glasses at Comcast payment centers and mall kiosks.) You'll almost feel the blood hitting your face. Slightly more high-minded death and mayhem comes from "The Cell 2," about a psychic investigator hired to get inside the mind of a serial killer.
But are there ugnots and mynockes? If you know the difference between a protocol droid and an astrotech droid, you might be a fanboy. The aptly named movie, "Fanboys," enters the strange and wonderful world of “Star Wars” junkies. Chances are, though, if you're a fanboy you've already seen this movie and if you're not, you have better things to do. Like go on a date.
Best On Demand Bet: Tom Cruise headlines "Valkyrie," a historical drama about an attempt to assassinate Hitler. It’s a great story that never quite clicks. With Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, and Terence Stamp, it'll be a welcome relief from all the flying limbs and frisky couples in the slasher flicks.
What's new in theaters?
Come on, Canada's not that bad: Sandra Bullock and new it-boy Ryan Reynolds star in "The Proposal," a romantic comedy about a woman faking a wedding engagement to avoid being deported ... to Canada. (Because Mounties are scary!)
Paving the way for 2,008 sequels: "Year One" stars some very funny people -- Jack Black, Michael Cera -- in a mish-mashed romp through the Stone Age, with a bit of Greek legend thrown in. You won't learn a lot about history, but might learn more than you want about body humor and really bad hair.
Best on-screen bet: "Whatever Works." Woody Allen returns to his usual subject matter: May-December romances in New York City. This time, Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) takes the lead in front of the camera as a neurotic older guy attracted to a convoluted relationship with a younger, hot woman.
Ticket or Click It?
Click It! Watch "Valkyrie" for two reasons. First, to be mildly inspired by a true-life tale of heroism that almost went right. Secondly, to marvel that a film that had so much going for it ended up being only mildly inspiring. Extra points if you look up all the crazy Cruise-driven drama that swirled around the making of the movie.
