Since everyone is piling on Andy Reid, Donovan McNabb, and the Eagles these days (myself included), maybe it's time to tear into Jeffrey Lurie a little bit.

The man who gave us "The Gold Standard" apparently doesn't have enough money to pay his debts. Or, he just figures he needs $8 million more than the city of Philadelphia does.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that the Eagles have owed the city $8 million since 2001, and are refusing to pay.

According to the Inquirer, the city helped out the Eagles by building sky boxes in the Vet. The city agreed to let the Eagles keep all of the revenue for 15 years, but after that, both entities were supposed to split the money earned from the luxury seating.

That money, $8 million, should have come in 2001. It's seven years later, and the city has yet to see a dime. The city sued the team in 2004 for more than $10 million, including back payments and interest.

The Birds (current value, according to Forbes: $1 billion) maintain that the city caused a canceled exhibition game that led to losses for the team. They apparently feel that the city owes them money, and have countersued. So now that it's in the courts, there's no great hurry to settle up. Let the court costs mount up and sooner or later, they probably figure, the city will cry uncle and walk away.

With the city of Philadelphia running a record deficit, this is an outrage. You can't blame the Eagles for Philly's problems, but you can blame them for welching on a deal that was enormously profitable for the organization.

At a time when Philadelphians across the region are losing their jobs, and the city is closing libraries and other public works programs because of a severe financial shortfall, the 5-5-1 Eagles are making more money than the Philly mint.

Playing hardball with a city that has given the Eagles organization tax break after tax break takes some brass...but denying the city money at a time when it is struggling to stay above water--that's more pathetic than the product the Eagles are putting on the field.

Mr. Lurie, this city has supported your team at every turn and will continue to do so despite the mucky future that lies ahead. It's time you return the "favor" and pay Philadelphia the money it is owed.

Do the Eagles owe anything to Philadelphia? What do you think of the dispute between the city and the team? Sound off here.

body Lurie, Banner, Reid and McNabb...bye-bye! Luurie and his cohort's religion is not what's at question here. Why is it that some knumbskull makes a racist comment ,because that's all their pea brains can ever see, and the whole thread becomes about the wrong message! The message here is simply this: Banner and Reid must GO!!! Banner's "the future at all costs" mentality without ever committing to the NOW combined with Reid's "I'm smarter than you all" stubborness is what has the team in this sorry state. Hire a REAL GM Jeffrey, a coach who understands that you can RUN THE FRIGGIN" ball AND pass it TOO, pick up a receiver who isn't an arena leauge reject and I think even McNabb would be able to remain. Otherwise we've got three more years of the same crap...time's yours, Jeff.

body Bottom line in all of this is if the poor guy who spends a huge portion of his yearly salary on tickets to the Eagles, whether they stick or not, also paid a portion to build those sjy boxes and deserves to have the contract that Lurie signed with the city upheld. Who among them would get away with not paying good old Jeffrey for their tickets when the team loses??

This should not surprise anyone. The stadiium deals that the owners and the city leader "sell" to citizens never work out on paper. A city will never financially recover the funds spent to build stadium.

The deals that are made between the state/local gov'ts and the team owners never pay off for the citizens. By the time the stadium deals start to benefit the citizens, the owners start demanding a new stadium/arena.

body If it were you. You could not take a hike! you would be in court paying it. Don't feel bad for the Eagles with the money they take in every week. They could pay off that 10 times over.

body Absolutely. The game they are speaking of was with Baltimore and since it was a pre-season game that had to be purchased with the season tickets I doubt whether the money was even refundable. Plus, the cancelled game was since 2001 - and so the Eagles should already have paid before that event. And I don;t think pre-season game tickets should average $119/per, which is what the $8,000,000 would be worth per each of 67,500 seats.

Jeffrey Lurie is just another NFL/Pro Sports Owner that believes the public owes him something. The City already allowed them to keep all the revenue from those boxes for 15 years! it's just like Pat Burrell turning down the Phillies $11M a season offer for the next two years. More than 10,000,000 have no jobs and more will shortly have no jobs - but $11,000,000 is not enough to play 162 chaild games next year.

We need to bring pro sports down to a level that is analagous with the economics of the ghard working people who foot the bills.

body And the respondents are correct, the race or religion of the Owner and his team has no place in this discussion. Arrogant, self-centered people come in all colors and creeds.

body What does being Jewish have to do with owing the city money. Lurie at least did build a winner, even though he never won a championship. Ed Snider and Harold Katz are Jewish, and they spent money and won. Let the courts decide. It just goes to show that no matter what there are still plenty of anti semitic, bigoted aholes out there.
