Does anyone with a brain and and interest in reading really think Oprah knows best? I am so sick of this woman and her attitude that she is the arbiter of taste, mores, etc. Whatever happened to thinking for yourself? Go to a library, a bookstore, for gods sake and choose something yourself. Nothing but the blind leading the blind. Don't fall for her. (and by the way, just because she has picked several books that were already best sellers BEFORE her name was associated with them just means she checks the bestseller lists, too!) I initially thought it would be interesting to read what she likes, but most of them are total DUDS. If I haven't already read it and Oprah recommends it, I will avoid it.

I just don't get what the Oprah hostility is about. Her book recommendations and interests are mostly about stuff that like minded women are interested in. If the above poster is a man than he probably should avoid Oprah's book picks although there are plenty of men who do enjoy Oprah. I'm not an "Oprah" fan. I rarely watch the show but I will never understand what the hostility is about. I think she must scare some people which is just plain silly. Seems they are afraid Oprah will take over the world....oooh no! She must be stopped! Goofballs.

Yeah, the Oprah aimed anger says a lot more about "rabblerouser" whose name probably says almost as much as his/her anger towards a deservedly well loved philanthropist. Get a life, or at least see a therapist. I've read lots of books that end up on Oprah's lists and they are rarely worse than a B.

Interesting. I think Rabblerouser is absolutely right. I am an avid reader (about 4 books a week) a few of the books on Oprah's list, i.e. East Of Eden, The Good Earth I read long ago, Cane River I read when it came out, anything Toni Morrison writes, I read. I find that most of Oprah's other picks are downright depressing. I think the best outcome is that there are now people who read who really did not before, sort of like the Harry Potter phenomenon. Browse the bookstores, folks, better yet, the library, if your libraries are like mine you can put books on hold thru the internet, newest ones included. Use your own brain, use your pc to find books on subjects you are interested in; what to buy out of print, try Alibris.com, wonderful.

Wow, rabblerouser.... you sound a little uptight. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there (with a brain!) who think for themselves on plenty of topics, not just a book suggestion. Take it easy, lighten up - things aren't that bad!

When she recommended "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb, I bought it and loved it. Still, there are many little-known books that dserve equal attention: "Gilgamesh" by Joan London, "Amagansett" by Mark Mills, "The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint" by Brady Udall, and so many others. As an avid reader and bookseller, I have been introduced to many fascinating works I would have otherwise have never known. Oprah's emphasis on reading is great, but there's a lot of stuff out there that is as good, if not better, than her book list. I listen to her recommendations, but I, and only I, make the decision!

Does any one know how to sugest a book for Oprah? I do not even know if she has a childrens book section, but I found a great nursery rhyme book Out of the Nursery by Elizabeth Gauthier. I found it on Amazon.com and it is funny, and I love that is printed in the USA. I think it is going to be an award winner and wanted to tell as many people as possible, because my kids love it.
