Norman Gentle"American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest said it all during the introduction to Thursday night's results show -- the foundation of this show is the power of the vote. "What have you done?" he said, before turning and shooting a glance at Nick Mitchell (a.k.a. Norman Gentle).

That was the big question on Wednesday: Did America put Norman Gentle into the "American Idol" top 12 for Season 8? The early front-runners were high-pitched emo-glam-rocker Adam Lambert and 16-year-old Allison Iraheta after Wednesday night's performances. But who would get that elusive third slot?

After another excruciating group performance, it was time for -- oh, no, more highlights. Eventually, though, it was time to get to some results.

Ryan asked Nick Mitchell/Norman Gentle what we could expect from him if he didn't get through. "I'm looking for employment, always," Nick said.

Ryan brought Allison Iraheta to center stage first and asked her to stand to the side and hang tight. He then asked Jesse Langseth to join him. She stepped to the side. Then, Ryan had Matt Breitzke come to the stage and put him with the two girls. Randy said he hoped it would be Allison going through. Ryan announced that after the nationwide vote, Allison was going into the finals. She sang "Alone" again.

Ryan brought Megan Joy Corkrey and Kris Allen to the stage. Then Matt Giraud and Jeanine Vailes came down. With the four of them standing there, Ryan told Jeanine the bad news, then Matt was out. That left it apparently clear for Megan to take the spot. But it was Kris who made it through and gave another performance of "Man in the Mirror," which was good because I was having trouble remembering what he sang Wednesday night. That is shocking.

(Click the video below to get Justin Guarini's take on this shocker, and more!)

After some more fluff, including a performance by Brooke White who did her new single, "Hold Up My Heart," we finally got back to the results, which we could assume would hand Adam Lambert a spot in the finals.

To determine who would get the final spot, Ryan asked all five remaining singers to come to the stage: Mishavonna Henson, Kai Kalama, Jasmine, Murray, Nick Mitchell/Norman Gentle and Adam Lambert. Ryan didn't waste much time in casting off Mishavonna, Kai and Jasmine.

Simon said he "prayed for about five or six hours nonstop, actually, last night," about Nick/Norman not making it through, "and I'm hoping me and God have got a good relationship right about now."

We had to wait through a commercial break to find out that Adam earned the final spot over Nick/Norman.

Is that the end of Norman Gentle? There's always the wild card...

Next week's dozen: Arriana Afsar, Ju'Not Joyner, Kristen McNamara, Nathaniel Marshall, Lil Rounds, Jorge Nunez, Kendall Beard, Scott MacIntyre, Felicia Barton, Von Smith, Taylor Vaifanua, and Alex Wagner-Trugman.

body I thought Mishavonna and Kai were both much better than Kris. Kris was pitchy in spots on his performance.
Anyone else annoyed the judges keep repeating "wrong song choice"? These 'kids' aren't professionals. Isn't someone helping them choose songs? Why don't the judges help them choose.

body Yes, Kris over Megan was a shocker, but a welcome one, in my opinion. Allison definitely deserved to go through, too. And I'm so intrigued by Adam! He sounds like one of those glam-rock hair bands from the late 80's, but I really like him and can't wait to hear him sing again. I actually would love to hear HIM sing "Alone."

body I'm glad Adam made it through but very upset that Norman,Nick didn't. You all just don't get how he was a breath of fresh air on this show. Last year it was all about pro's who failed on there own. At least this season you can tell they are not "Pro's" gone bad. To have someone who has humor and dang he can sing, look back in history and some great singers that were also comedic. That certainly would have made this season something to watch that's for sure. But hey that's just my opionion.

body I was sorry to see Norman go. I thought he was very entertaining with all the depressing things happening in the world these days. I don't think he could win. First he comes on with his comedy and song and they like it, then he comes back serious because they want to see who he is, then they don't like him...they liked him before...what's the guy to do? I hope he finds something, I think a lot of us like some laughter in our life these days!!!

body Not sad to see Norman/Nick go - entertaining, to some I suppose - however, not what Idol is trying to achieve. Soooo glad that Allison was chosen - Heart is a hard vocal to follow and she did a great job. It was a toss up for me whether it should have been the girl with the sleeve tattoo or Kris - for my number two choice - glad it was one of them. Would have liked to see what the sleeve could've done outside of the corrine bailey rae type music - guess we will never know!

body I was definately shocked. I had Allison, Adam, and Nick picked to win. Chris getting through, shocked me. I think that Norman Gentle, as he calls himself should have been put through. I mean, if Sinjaya made it as far as he did several years ago, why couldnt he. At least he doesnt have a pony hawk.

body I'm so glad my favorite, Adam, made it through! His voice blows me away! You could tell that when it came down to him and Norman that Adam knew he was going through. No shocker there. But I loved how Ryan said it came down to three; Nick, Norman, and Adam. Hilarious!

I also voted for Kris last night. We didn't see him much in hollywood so I was surprised he made it. I loved how humble and excited he was when he found out he made it. I think he was too emotional to sing. He seems like a very nice guy and has a great voice, so he deserves to be in the compitition.

I thought Allison did well last night also, but I didn't vote for any of the girls because none of them really stood out to me. It seems like the guys have the talent this season.

body I think if Nick would have sang something serious, people would see that he actually does have a decent voice. Norman does have a future, but not on american idol. Maybe the gay Weird Al? :0)
