Yesterday UK bloggers The Quietus posted a preview of the new Metallica album after hearing it at an invite-only session in London. Their coverage -- which you can still find here -- is a relatively fair piece that discusses the hardship of being a Metallica fan some twenty years after their epic, "...And Justice for All."

The Quietus contributor "Bob Mulhouse" is circumspect about the album's prospects, saying, "This album could be good, or it could be mediocre – too much depends on the other four songs to make a call at this point." Nothing out of the ordinary for a record review after a one-time listen.

It came as something of a surprise then to find that the internet had been expunged of any coverage of the event. We emailed The Quietus editor Luke Turner about what happened. He gave this response:

The story behind the removal of the article runs as follows: Metallica held an album listening party for selected music journalists in London this Wednesday past. One of the writers was kind enough to write a piece about the album which, if you were lucky enough to read it before it was taken down, was full of praise about a return to form. At no point was the writer ask[ed] to sign a non-disclosure agreement. The Quietus and other websites ran pieces on the album, but were quickly contacted by Metallica’s management via a third party and told to remove the articles. The Quietus kept our article up the longest and, as no non-disclosure agreement had been signed, [was] not prepared to remove it merely due to the demands of Metallica’s management. We only eventually removed the article earlier today to protect the professional interests of the writer concerned (the piece was written anonymously). Seems Metallica’s fear of the internet shows no sign of abating.
Interesting, huh? We're still waiting for comment from Metallica's camp, and will post their response when we receive it. Developing...

body While Metallica has been one of the single bands that has consistantly battled the downloading of their music for free, I find nothing wrong with it! Just as metalhead2 said, no matter how you look at it stealing is stealing. Put yourself in their shoes, if it were your music wouldn't you want to make the money that you deserve off it? And the years between albums has never seemed to hurt them, just keeps their real fans waiting with baited breath to hear their next Masterpiece! I do not like everything they have come out (covering Bob Seger's "Turn The Page" was like nails on a chalkboard for me) but turn my back on them, NEVER! I think they are an amazing band and their business choices do not reflect on my like or dislike of what they come out with! Keep Rocking Metallica!

body They made their millions years ago and now have nothing to write about. What have they got to be angry and dark about anymore. Now it just seems like they are trying manufacture things to give that edge that they had with their youth. It's something that happens to all bands. They all evolve over time. It's just that Metallica has gone in a direction that their base fans don't care for. Yet, they seem to think we are wrong for not liking it. The black album was mediocre at best and it's been down hill ever since. Newsted was smart to get out while he could.

body Come on folks this isn't about illeagle downloads of music its about people writing a review of what they heard. Got to remember Metallica invited these people to a private hearing of a song. People where not asked to sign a non-disclossure aggreement. This aggrement would make it so they could not say one word on what they heard but they where never asked to sign one. Than said people wrote a review, some really positive some saying they are waiting to hear the rest of the album before they will pass judgement. Than Metallica gets mad and makes everyone take down said reviews. Shrug you don't want people to talk about what they heard you either make them sign a non-disclosure aggrement or don't have a private airing and just let people pass judgement when said album comes out.

body If you invite writers to your event UNCONDITIONALLY, play your music and DON'T protect your work, the columnist is hardly accountable for publicly commenting on it. There was no theft involved. Commenting is not theft. You can't unconditionally invite the media to your event and then whine like little school girls when they do their job. Metallica is just out to sue people in my opinion. Look up sell-out in the dictionary and you'll see Metallica.

body Isn't it funny that when they were new and struggling (and could have used the money most) all of the bootleg copies of there shows that were being traded up and down the West Coast, was "marketing".
But after they made it big and started to sell out stadiums bootlegs of their music became "stealing".

Very interesting.

body We know what really happened: They held what amounts to a press conference and wanted good reviews. When they didn't get good reviews, because they suck now, they got mad and only want good press. Well, I've got news for them. They're not hot "S" anymore because they've sold out and all turned into little princesses that always want their way.

I agree Cliff must have been the bands leader because they haven`t made anything that is Blow your Head Off since Master Of Puppets. Yeah they have had a few good riffs here and there but nothing compairs to Puppets. I remember reading back in1986 in Rolling Stone mag that Metallica was the next Led Zepplin. Then just like Zepplin they should call it quits. And that video about them seeing a shrink. Give me a **bleep**ing break!! Go whine to someone else! I couldn`t believe that crap!! No wonder Jason left the band!!!!  I can`t believe they would even let this be aired or put on video. When I saw this video of them being in front of a shrink and when Dave Mustaine a former member was sitting there crying like a little baby I`m thinking what has  Heavy Metal come too.  A bunch of whinning little whimps with too much money on there hands. Pull your head out of your asses and get on with the music or at least have the courage to take your own life like Kurt Cobain or Jimmy Hendrix or some of the greats that they knew it was time to go or just didn`t give a **bleep** any more and just wanted to get away from the business of the music industry.  What happened to these guy`s?
