Late last night Metallica posted a message to their website in an effort to quell the controversy that began a week ago when their management asked bloggers to pull all previews of the new Metallica album from their blogs. On its face it seems like Metallica were caught unaware and that a rogue member of their management, Q Prime, called for the reviews to be redacted.

We're not buying it.

The statement, which can be read in full here, looks like the handiwork of Metallica's petulant posterboy Lars Ulrich, right down to its passive-aggressive, 'who me?' tone. As anyone who's seen the Metallica documentary 'Some Kind of Monster' would know, the band became unsure of themselves and their new material quite some time ago, and would likely do anything they could to quash any doubt that their new album would be anything short of a return to form. That, or their management would seek to protect their fragile egos with a stunt like this.

Perhaps more importantly, why would any blog oblige them? Sure, a magazine like "Kerrang!" might be desperate for readership and the promise of a Metallica cover story (which may explain their cloying remarks about Metallica's new material), but a controversial story like this is blogosphere gold, particularly for a new site like The Quietus. If no non-disclosure agreement was signed, why cave in to Metallica's management? Moreover, why bother republishing the review? Critics owe Metallica no favors. Metallica may be the best-selling metal band of all time, but it doesn't make them the Internet's master of puppets.

That Metallica would deign to wade into the blogosphere like this and think that they can emerge unscathed shows that they're still fighting the Internet, and it's a losing battle.

body I started listening to Metallica when Kill em all came out. And justice for all and Black came, there were a few good songs but not like the first albums where every song rocked. You say they are maturing as muscians, I guess I mutured in my listening because they suck. Much better metal bands out there now. Machine Head? Bullet for My Valentine?

body Metallica is one of the greats! Not one band you mentioned could hold a candle. As a fan from way back, I agree that some of their music doesn,t quite hit that "And Justice For All" status, it still rocks! The problem is that the youth of today are soft, and it shows in their choices of metal!

first off. metallica stopped writing anything good when cliff died. kirk hammet is nothing anymore. it's hard to think that joe satriani taught him. he used to have great solos. that has rotted away with his and their ego. they cater to the 16 and under crowd, and have done so since the 90's. most of you here really have to discover what metal really is. go back to metallica's early years, BEFORE and justice for all. pantera kicked their poppy rears back to the bay area. dime was a god, he had a style like no one else could have. HIS solos were original. kirk's solos from 89-now are nothing but a tyrade of wah-wah pedal addictions. it's old, kirk. metallica have lost the "metal" in their name, it should be "alternica". COC are not COC anymore, they sold out and got confused in the southern rock trend ,like DOWN. PHIL must bow to the brothers' abbott for his similar ego escaping him. metallica are nothing more than a pop sensation these days. they are weak, and are boring, song titles and topics are childish, and MTV friendly now. fuel for the teeny-boppers who need to learn what real friggin metal is. i got "kill em all" the day it was released, i was 10 years old. i still play lead axe to this day, and kirk and co. are nothing but a let-down. look at these new bands, like shadows fall, black tide, dimmu borgir, well, dimmu is not new, they have the classic metal sound. lars ulrich makes this fellow denmark descendant sick to my stomach. the deftones are NOT metal at all, anything signed to madonna's label is NOT metal. they play no more than 3 -two finger chords,, another bunch of nu-rock guys who never learned to properly play. that trend died too. pantera, slayer, sabbath, testament, nevermore, the sword, iron maiden, kreator and bathory to name a few are METAL. not this crap you see on MTV or metal edge magazine or anything like that. i'm 34 years into  life, and most of these bands are too, and i still play to this day. metallica WERE my heros. lars, james, kirk, good job at being greedy. robert, go back to suicidal tendencies and play a meaner bass!! i do find it strange that every new band that newsted joins, breaks up. RIP voivod, dime, chuck schuldiner, quorthon, paul baloff.

body Finally, someone knows what the hell they are talkin about! Thorrshammer knows whats up! Penguin87 has no clue. Pantera played many shows before Dime was killed. Since when have album sales defined band quality? That just means they are more commercial and mainstream than everyone else. Thats the most ignorant thing I have ever heard! 30 million plus people watch American Idol. Does that make it the best thing on TV? Hardly! Its the same principle man. Visit the old school for proper metal.

body Metalica has lost any credibility in Metal they once possessed.. I wont slam them anymore than that because I do appreciate the great music they did make. I, like all of you don't have to give up any of of my hard earned cash for music I don't like. In that way I have made all the statement I needed to make about their current musical offerings...with my wallet .. And that Pantara crack that one dumb **bleep** made shows that he would be better served listening to EMO...

Hey Penguin87, you might want to check your facts.

First and foremost, Dimebag was murdered long after Pantera broke up. He and Vinnie were in Damageplan at the time of Dime's murder.

Finally, you are the tool. Any quasimetal fan would know the above information. Doesn't say much about you, does it?

most of the bands named here would bow and give thanx to metallica for the road they paved. You internet babies complain cause you can't get it for free, some how someway since the internet has evolved people seem to think you can have everything for free and also think you control the internet haha!!! puppets, HMMM maybe master of puppets. You talk about selling out, the whole internet generation has sold out, lazy, weak and want it now attitude. If your a true fan of metal and music then you should be able to stand by the bands even when they make bad choices and yeah make a movie and look like tools which they did but they are still my roots to metal music. And all you kiddies that talk about the new bands, which are good don't get me wrong but lets see how long they will stay together. Bands that stay together that long are gonna make mistakes and make some songs that make you go UH? Kirk is one of the most copied metal guitarist, look it up, and why? Cause your bands from the late 80's to now grew up listening to them, which is the sweet irony in all the bitchin about how good metallica is or was. Metallica is god, imperfect yes but still top metal dog and you will grovel at their feet and give thanx for inspiring all the  metal bands you listin to today.

body Metallica's brilliance was fueled by alcohol not musicianship. As with so many pop metal bands.
I WOULD SAY THE PARTY'S OVER.
