Anderson Silva and Co. demanded a challenge, and it looks like they’ve gotten one.

UFC president Dana White informed YahooSports! that the reigning middleweight champ will fight former light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin as a co-main event at UFC 101 in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love’s first-ever UFC event.

The signing comes less than two weeks after Silva’s lopsided, largely ho-hum decision victory over Thales Leites at UFC 97 in which the champ fielded an ocean of criticism from fans, media and White.

The less-than-spectacular main event was high on technical skill and hugely historic, but low on entertainment value. Afterwards, Silva defended his performance while his manager, Ed Soares, expressed his concerns about the UFC’s recent inability to challenge the champ with more multi-dimensional fighters.

White, who called himself “embarrassed” by Silva’s outing, responded with Griffin -- a challenger known for bringing fights.

“I talked to [a reporter] the day after [UFC 97] and that’s when I started working on this,” White said. “At the end of the day, it’s my job to put on the kinds of fights that you in the media will like and that the fans will want to see. Silva and Griffin is the kind of fight that even other fighters are going to go crazy for. That’s what I do for a living.

“Forrest loved the idea and said he’d do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is. So we got the deal.”

“The deal” has all the makings for a heated, fast-paced fight, and is an added bonus to the headlining lightweight title bout between B.J. Penn and No. 1 contender Kenny Florian.

Soares said the champ is excited to face Griffin, the original “Ultimate Fighter” who defeated Quinton “Rampage” Jackson for the light heavyweight title, but lost it in his first defense via a second-round TKO to Rashad Evans last December.

“It’s a great fight for him and he’s anxious and excited about it,” Soares said. “Forrest is a bigger, stronger guy with a lot of cardio and he’s the full package. The other thing Anderson likes about it is that Forrest is a big name with a huge heart and is a fan favorite kind of a guy. That’s the kind of match that makes a legendary kind of a fight and that’s what Anderson wants.”

Griffin was previously slated to fight Thiago Silva in Philly. It’s not yet clear why White replaced Thiago with The Spider, or whether the newly announced Silva-Griffin fight will take place at 205, 185 or a catchweight.

The Griffin bout will mark the first of four remaining fights on Anderson Silva's UFC contract. As for the other three, White mentioned a possible middleweight title showdown with Michael Bisping, assuming Bisping defeats Dan Henderson at UFC 100, as well as an undisclosed middleweight signee that will “blow your mind.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Silva also expressed interest in fighting heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko, assuming White can rope him in.

But, of course, first there’s Forrest Griffin.

What do you make of Silva-Griffin? Are you excited for the fight? Who is the favorite? Sound off here.

body I am extremely excited about this fight. The winner of this fight, in my opinion is tough to determine. Yea, Silva completely dominated James Irvin in his 205 debut, but Griffin is a much better fighter than Irvin, and being the former light-heavyweight champ just adds to the excitement. Hopefully this bout does take place at 205, but at catchweight this fight would be crazy to say the least. Who do I want to win? I don't care, these are my 2 favorite fighters and as long as they put on a good show, this fight will be close to legendary, i'll be content.

body Wow! a great matchup (on paper)... Dana gets its done.
I'd like to see Forrest win, but the Spider is too good; he wins via KO (if Thales really wanted to fight, he would've been KO'd too).
As for his reamining 3 fights under contract, I believe we'll see the Spider vs. Sugar Rashad (if Spider beats Forrest, and Sugar beats Loyoto of course).
His last two fights should definately be against GSP and who the article and Dana White reffered to as "blow your mind"......Vitor Belfort: the Phenom looks poised to make another run at the title, this time at a 185lbs in the UFC.

body With the performence Silva has showed lately, I think he is without doubt the best fighter, not just pound per pound. He is universal, not just a good striker or jujitsu master, etc. . With all due respect for Forrest, that's not a even match( regarding skills) .I give 1% to Forrest, you never know in these kind of fights ("I got caught", said Lidell against Rashad) . I think for Silva a dangerous fighter might be Loyoto, because he is very causioous. JSP is my other favorite fighter, but he's not agresive enough for Silva. Silva impresed me since I saw him the first time in UFC, and I wasn't wrong. He is full package, body and mind, at least for now. If he does the same thing in 205, that is gonna be great.

body This has all the makings to be one of the greatest fights in UFC history. Obviously Silva is the pound for pound king and the best fighter in the UFC as of right now, but considering the scubs he has fought lately I wouldn't be surprised to see an upset here just because if there is anyone lucky enough to catch Silva off guard it would be Forrest. I like both of these fighters, Forrest being my favorite and Silva being about #3 on my list, so either way as long as this is a great fight I'll be happy.

body Exciting! Maybe for one round because thats probably all it will last.I like Forrest and he does have a lot of heart . He is a fighter that will bring it and that is exactly why he wont last very long.Silva is the man! Instead of wishing so hard that he loses, people should be sitting back admiring his skills.I'm not upset with Silva's performance in either of his last two fights.Silva doesn't have to chase people down. He's the champ! You're in there to take his belt.

body Forest was my favourite, but lately he looks like he lost that 'hunger', and was completely overmatched against Evans. Even when the "Spider" is not on the top of his game, as the critics have put it, he wins his fights without really breaking a good sweat or really using his tools. Forest may make it out of the first round, that's a huge if, the Spider is untouchable, and will 'Yawn' at his next three opponents before retiring , Unmatched and Untouched!

body I have to agree with F1DABOLTZ, Griffin is a fricking stud and I was overwhelmed to see him beat Jackson however, I dont think he is ready for Silva. Both of them are tough, love to watch their fights but I dont see this lasting very long either. As much as I respect both fighters, I'd LOVE to see Griffin kick Silva's **bleep**!
