Anderson Silva and Co. demanded a challenge, and it looks like they’ve gotten one.

UFC president Dana White informed YahooSports! that the reigning middleweight champ will fight former light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin as a co-main event at UFC 101 in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love’s first-ever UFC event.

The signing comes less than two weeks after Silva’s lopsided, largely ho-hum decision victory over Thales Leites at UFC 97 in which the champ fielded an ocean of criticism from fans, media and White.

The less-than-spectacular main event was high on technical skill and hugely historic, but low on entertainment value. Afterwards, Silva defended his performance while his manager, Ed Soares, expressed his concerns about the UFC’s recent inability to challenge the champ with more multi-dimensional fighters.

White, who called himself “embarrassed” by Silva’s outing, responded with Griffin -- a challenger known for bringing fights.

“I talked to [a reporter] the day after [UFC 97] and that’s when I started working on this,” White said. “At the end of the day, it’s my job to put on the kinds of fights that you in the media will like and that the fans will want to see. Silva and Griffin is the kind of fight that even other fighters are going to go crazy for. That’s what I do for a living.

“Forrest loved the idea and said he’d do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is. So we got the deal.”

“The deal” has all the makings for a heated, fast-paced fight, and is an added bonus to the headlining lightweight title bout between B.J. Penn and No. 1 contender Kenny Florian.

Soares said the champ is excited to face Griffin, the original “Ultimate Fighter” who defeated Quinton “Rampage” Jackson for the light heavyweight title, but lost it in his first defense via a second-round TKO to Rashad Evans last December.

“It’s a great fight for him and he’s anxious and excited about it,” Soares said. “Forrest is a bigger, stronger guy with a lot of cardio and he’s the full package. The other thing Anderson likes about it is that Forrest is a big name with a huge heart and is a fan favorite kind of a guy. That’s the kind of match that makes a legendary kind of a fight and that’s what Anderson wants.”

Griffin was previously slated to fight Thiago Silva in Philly. It’s not yet clear why White replaced Thiago with The Spider, or whether the newly announced Silva-Griffin fight will take place at 205, 185 or a catchweight.

The Griffin bout will mark the first of four remaining fights on Anderson Silva's UFC contract. As for the other three, White mentioned a possible middleweight title showdown with Michael Bisping, assuming Bisping defeats Dan Henderson at UFC 100, as well as an undisclosed middleweight signee that will “blow your mind.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Silva also expressed interest in fighting heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko, assuming White can rope him in.

But, of course, first there’s Forrest Griffin.

What do you make of Silva-Griffin? Are you excited for the fight? Who is the favorite? Sound off here.

body I hope this fight goes as a catchweight fight!! I have been watching UFC for yrs. I would like to see it go back to the days of no weight class. To me thats true MMA. I like Silva but I would like to see Griffin clean his clock. I think if Anderson got knocked out, it would let us know if he is the fighter we think he is. We seen it a bunch when a fighter gets knock out, he is challeged mentally to make a come back. But I will finish by saying Silva vs. GSP would still be a better fight!!!!

body No weight class? It will be fun but no fair. I don't think a 155 can last to Lesnar. Maybe a 50 pound diference, I agree. Cuture is great and we saw what hapened with Lesnar. GSP is the closest to Silva regarding total package, yes.

body Forest is a fighter with an ability to take a hit pretty good and keep it coming with gale force ,he's a scrapper in my opinion and with a good guard. Anderson is a relentless aggressor with a lot of skill & with lethal and accurate kicking. I may like Forest more as a fighter but I think Anderson will take him.

I also agree that Fedor would destroy Silva, but what glory would it bring to Fedor if that match were to happen. Fedor, if he wins will get criticized for beating a smaller opponent and if he loses will definitely face great humiliation. It's a lose-lose for Fedor to take the fight, unless he gets mad money for it.
On the Silva-Griffin fight, no disrespect to Forrest but he is very inconsistent. He definitely has the strength and heart to win but what he lacks is technical skills and speed. The way I see it, both fighters are pretty well matched up. Forrest would be the strongest fighter with the most heart Silva has ever faced. And Silva would be the most well-rounded, multiple threat fighter Forrest has ever faced. To simply put it, If both fighters were naturally the same size, then Silva would destroy Forrest. But since Silva is fighting a much bigger guy, he essentially is being handicapped which makes the fight more even. I like both fighters, but I have to give more props to Silva. Anyone who has to go outside his weight class to look for a challenge is definitely PIMP!

body there is no doubt about Griffens cardio and toughness, though i've seen him get wobbled a few times in his fights as to where the opponents don't act upon fast enough, but if Silva rocks him , even just alittle, you know he's gonna swarm all over him, relentlessly like flies on sh*t!!!

body I think Silva has been subpar his last 2 fights and may be ripe for the picking. No doubt that he has the edge over Griffin with his jui jitsu but if the fight stays on the feet, Griffin may have a good shot for the upset. I think that Silva is somewhat bored, not because he's so great and unbeatable as most of the better fighters reside outside his weight class, but because winning will do that to some fighters. Not sure if he still has the motivation to train at the highest level anymore. If he gets beat then that might help motivate him. I'm not a big fan of either but I'm pulling for Forrest here.

body Franklin is a game fighter and can compete with anyone. He will have a weight advantage no matter what weight they fight at, and keep in mind it will only be a 3 round fight, which gives Griffin the advantage. He only has to take Silva down a couple of times, stay on top, and avoid any big punches/kicks/knees to win a decision. Leites may have one a 3 rounder after seeing the ridiculous scoring by the judges. All that said, Silva is too quick and puts punches and kicks together too well for Griffin to beat him. What's more, if Silva wins this fight White would almost be forced to give him a run at the 205 championship after maybe one more fight against the number one 205 contender. It wouldn't make sense for him to fight GSP anymore because he's fighting 2 weight classes up, and winning! GSP is good guys, but he lacks the power to win. Add that to the fact that he's not quicker than Silva I don't see why that fight would hapen unless Silva loses to Griffin. Either way it's gonna be a hell of a ride, and extremely entertaining for the fans.

body By the way Silva walks around at about 215 lbs & is a huge middleweight. There is virtually going to be no size advantage for Forrest on the night of the fight. Unless you consider Silva's stick legs as a disadvantage.

body Silva will definitely damage Griffin, but Griffin is a mofo bulldog, all he has to do is what he does best - relentlessly go after his opponent, take some abuse(which he is proven to take time and time again) and ground and pound Silva into a pulp. Silva does NOT like to be dominated. Griffin will destroy Silva in the final rounds. Both have excellent cardio. Silva has accuracy and is crazy skilled, but Griffin is a slippery, tough bulldog.

As far as Fedor vs Silva - that would be a joke. Fedor would destroy silva in the first round, and would likely ground and pound and then shred one of his knees within 30 seconds.
