Comcasters Send a “Big” Gift to Fairhill Elementary School

As an element of Comcast’s national partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Comcast locations around the country partner with local elementary schools through The John Alchin Beyond School Walls program.

The program originated at headquarters in Philadelphia, where Bigs partnered with Littles from Fairhill Elementary School in the Kensington section. Littles visit their Bigs at the Comcast Center every other week.

In June, the Bigs visited Fairhill for Reverse Day, as the Littles hosted their Bigs in the school library. But a sad discovery was made—the library didn’t have a single book.

So the Bigs quickly organized a book drive, and the Bigs’ wish to see the library stocked with books is now reality.

Comcasters donated more than 1,600 books, and the Comcast Foundation donated four new computers and a laser printer, instantly creating a multi-media center where basic and digital literacy could begin to flourish.

The Bigs and the books arrived at Fairhill, where they were greeted by cheering children and teachers, and considerable media fan fare. “Today is a day that is about what’s right with the world,” said CEO of BBBS Southeastern PA Marlene Olshan. “We are building a stronger Philadelphia and a stronger region.”

For up to the minute information on this and all of Comcast’s Community Investment initiatives, we invite you to become a fan on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and visit the Community Investment section of Comcast Voices.

The Piazza at Schmidts, is one of the more unique examples of New Urbanism, right here in Philadelphia. This "five minute" neighborhood is a beautifully landscaped, open air plaza with free events almost daily, surrounded by three new emerging artist’s studios and eclectic boutiques, restaurants and bars that probably serve PBR, (snark alert!) apartments and office space in the Northern Liberties neighborhood, (2nd and Hancock Streets). This weekend, sample an arts market, a running clinic, live music, films and the Phillies game broadcast on a JumboTron.

Been there? Review it!

Thanks to the dedication of thousands of Comcast employees all over the country, their families and friends, and our community partners, we had a record-breaking turnout for the eighth annual Comcast Cares Day on April 25.

Well over 50,000 volunteers came out to do their part at more than 550 project sites.

Around Philadelphia, employees cleaned and painted at Hunting Park Recreation Center, landscaped the Royal Gardens at Morris Park, and planted flowers in Camden, NJ.

Comcast has been a local company since we were founded over 45 years ago.  Since then, our 100,000 employees have been dreaming big to create products that have changed the way people communicate, are informed and entertained.  By providing access to innovative technology, contributing millions in financial support and delivering millions of volunteer hours in our communities, we strive to improve the quality of life in all places where our customers and employees live and work.

Since Comcast Cares Day began in 2001, more than 220,000 volunteers have contributed well over one million hours of service at 2,300 project sites.  Comcast Cares Day is the cornerstone event of a year-round commitment to our communities.

body We power dreams in our communities.

Our most visible effort is the annual Comcast Cares Day, which this year takes place on April 25.  We anticipate that 50,000 volunteers –– Comcast employees, their friends and families, elected officials, and community partners–– will deliver 300,000 hours of community service on more than 400 project sites across the country. Since Comcast Cares Day began in 2001, more than 170,000 volunteers have contributed one million hours of service at 1,750 project sites.  Comcast Cares Day is the cornerstone event of a year-round commitment to our communities.

More than 8,000 people circulated through the Wachovia Center at the Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival on Sunday, February 22.  Comcast-Spectacor Foundation’s largest fundraising event, the Carnival has raised and donated nearly $21 million back into the community over the past 32 years.  The money raised benefits local non-profit organizations with a focus on youth and health care.  Past beneficiaries include, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Chrohns & Colitis Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, National Adoption Center and many others.

Fans had the opportunity to meet and take pictures with their favorite Flyers and Phantoms players, play state of the art games and activities, such as Wii Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Boxing, shot-on-goal, Carnival games, Dunk Tank, etc. and have their picture taken with the Stanley Cup and Flyers alumni.  Fans were also able to purchase raffle tickets to win prizes, including a team-signed 2009 Harley-Davidson 883L and a 2009 Toyota Sienna XLE.

Auction items included the opportunity to “Travel with the Team” with roundtrip travel on the Flyers charter plane to an away game, hotel accommodations and tickets to the away game.  Other auction items available included floor seats to a Sixers game with Flyers Lisa and Scott Hartnell; and lunch at Capital Grille with Flyers Joffrey Lupul and Scottie Upshall.

You can still be part of the cause; the online auction is still open for bids, just click here.  So, if you are a sports fan, don’t miss your chance at some one-of-a-kind experiences and help raise funds for many non-profits in the Philadelphia area.

A couple of hundred people gathered on January 12 at the Comcast Center.  They were there for City Year’s launch of a powerful new national campaign, which encourages young adults to “give a year” and “change the world.”

Lofty goals for the 17- to 24-year-olds City Year seeks?  Sure.  But listen to what Mayor Nutter told the crowd.

“City Year works with school-age children on a daily basis,” he said.  “There are some young people in our Philadelphia schools whose interaction with a City Year person may be the only positive role model in their lives.  So when City Year gives a year to change the world, they’re also changing lives.”

City Year’s series of public service announcements were played on the giant Comcast Experience video wall.  Applause rang out after each of the five PSAs were played.  Comcast is a national corporate partner with City Year and provides airtime on its networks for the PSAs.

About 225 corps members serve in Philadelphia among nearly 1,500 nationally, but more help is needed.  Go to www.cityyear.org for more info.

Comcast and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) have embarked on a $10 million three-year national partnership, making a difference in the lives of some of America’s most vulnerable children.  Through the John Alchin Beyond School Walls program, hundreds of Comcast employees will soon become BBBS mentors.  The first leg of the program kicked off this fall at Comcast Headquarters in Philadelphia.

As part of our newest partnership, Comcast recently began airing a public service announcement for BBBS.  The results so far: terrific.

“BigBrothersBigSisters.org has experienced large increases in the total volunteer inquiries and, most importantly, male volunteer inquiries since Comcast began airing the Men in Need PSA on August 1,” said Judy Vredenburgh, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.  “Since then, our male volunteer inquiries have been up by 20 percent a week.”

Though Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for volunteers from all walks of life, currently there is a greater need for men.  Did you know that 70 percent of the children waiting for a Big are boys?  But only three of every 10 inquiries to volunteer come from men.

Research shows that having the positive influence of a Big Brother makes a real difference in the life of a boy.
