I've heard some good and not-so-good things about teeth whiteners, such as they are the most dramatic, least expensive way to improve appearance they can damage your enamel. Do you use any you like that you consider to be safe? Can children use them, or should they?  My dentist said to use tootpaste, but it's not doing much.

I use teeth whiteners so does my husband and my daughter (she's 24). Her dentist actually recomended her using them. They work very well, as well as the ones from the dentist that you pay several hundreds of dollars for. It just takes longer if you do it yourself. You need to be really careful with it though. I actually damaged my front teeth by leaving it on too long ( an hour) then brushing my teeth immediatly afterward with a tooth brush when my enamel was very soft. Now there are permanent vertical ridges in my two front teeth. My dentist has tried to sand them out but they are too deep. Read the directions and you will need touch up occasionally especially if you drink coffee, coke, tea, red wine, smoke or anything else that stains the teeth.
I like Colgate Simply White that you apply with a small brush like nail polish. I also like Dental White by Dr. George. It's a gel. I paint this on with the brush of the Simply White. There are so many one's on the market now that probably work. My daughter uses one that is a strip that actually disolves in her mouth after awhile which I think would be very convient.

I tried the Whitestrips; not routine friendly-who has 20 minutes to stand around in bathroom waiting for them to work?  I tried Supersmile from QVC; it works, but I think it's expensive.  I finally went "old school" and I use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide; pour a little baking soda in the palm of your hand, then take a capful of peroxide, dip your (hopefully) electric toothbrush in the peroxide, then dip your toothbrush in the baking soda, making a "paste."  Hope this helps.

Tooth whiteners remove tiny layers of enamel which contain "stain".  Over time and continued use the enamel becomes non-existent.  Or very compromised.  This leaves your teeth open for gum line cavities.  This keeps the Dr in business.  Enamel can not be replaced! Helpful hints drink staining drinks from a straw, avoid smoking, and floss floss floss.  Good Luck

I've always had trepidations about using something like this to whiten teeth. Now, I believe that these preparations contain "peroxide" in the whitening solution. Imagine taking a bottle of peroxide and drinking that stuff down. Wouldn't that have an effect on the blood in your body? Or, the molecular structure of your organs? I would imagine that it wiould act like a super oxidant in your system and wreak havoc where ever it goes. Am I right or wrong?   :smileyindifferent:

I have used teeth whiteners before and there are two I can recommend. One brand is Target's Disolving Strips.  The other brand is Plus White 5 Minute Speed Whitening Gel.  Be cautious to follow the directions. If you leave the solution on for too long, it can make your teeth super-sensitive and cause you great pains. I don't think kids should use these products.

I have always used good old fashioned baking soda once a week to remove stains, and if you make a paste with peroxide this is very good for warding off gum disease.  I wouldn't use it daily, but once a week is good.  I think a lot of this tooth whitening started because teeth naturally darken after 40 so it is yet another way to chase eternal youth.  Now while everyone is whitening and brightening, I have to say that I've seen some people who's teeth are so white that they look FAKE.

I used the Crest Whitestrips years ago and got good results from them.  No problems at all. But just like everyone has said, be sure to follow the directions to the letter.  And remember that you can't get your teeth any whiter than they will naturally go.  In other words, your natural tooth color probably isn't pure white.  It's going to be some level of off-white.  Remember the commercial years ago for some toothpaste that was supposed to whiten your teeth? There was a first grade teacher asking the kids in her class what color her teeth were, expecting them to say white.  They came up with beige, something else, and the best response was 'mother-of-pearl'!  I loved that commercial!  Anyway you can't get white teeth if they weren't naturally white to begin with.  Have fun!!!

I've used the Crest Whitestrips Classic. It's a 14-day procedure. I just put the strips in and went about my business until time to take them off. I didn't have any negative side effects at all (I followed the directions). Best of all, people began to notice and ask what had I done to get my teeth so white. My teeth have stayed white for a long time since. Of course, I brush regularly, as well.
