SAD - anyone else?

As I sit here on this first dreary, rainy, gray Monday after the end of Daylight Savings Time, I am experiencing the full effects of my SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  I was wondering if anyone else in the CS has SAD?  What do you do to relieve your symptoms (if you feel like sharing)?

Having suffered with SAD since before it was a "real" disorder, I will briefly describe how it affects my life.
  • Usually begins late September; lasts until late April.
  • My body feels as though it wants to hibernate until spring returns.
  • Constant craving for carbs.
  • Very little energy; struggle to stay awake through the afternoon.
  • Depression.

After my initial diagnosis in the early 90's,  I was prescribed Prozac from Sept - April annually.  Hated it - made my emotions flat - no highs / no lows.  Took myself off Prozac after two years.  Last year I started using full-spectrum light therapy and found it helpful.  Light therapy mimics outdoor light and causes a biochemical change in your brain that lifts your mood, relieving symptoms of seasonal affective disorder.

This year I am using light therapy again but it does not seem to have as strong a positive effect as last year; could be because I am more depressed this year than I was last year.  Oh well.

The light bulbs do help me as well. It also helps to get enough exercise. We tend to get more sedentary in the winter and that slows down your metabolism making one sluggish. Eating a well-balanced diet and taking a good multi-vitamin supplement is good too. :smileywink::smileyhappy:

I'm pretty sure my ex has it.  He was always cranky, flakey and undependable from roughly Halloween through Easter, but great Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Back in the early 80s when SAD was just starting to be recognized, I still lived in Alaska.  I noticed I felt better if I would give myself a month or so of tanning bed exposure somewhere between December-February.  But of course there the changes from light to dark are much more dramatic, and the days are short and dark for much longer periods of time.  Can't really say whether it was the lights or just lying there warm and with the fan noises blowing meditating about being on the beach in Hawaii that was the mood improvement :smileyhappy:

I have it.  I'm interested to see what others have to say, because I don't feel I manage it well.

And a PBR for depression will only make it worse.  Alcohol is a CNS depressant.  On the other hand, if you're manic, drink away.  Just don't drive.

What I lack in youth, I make up for in cynicism.

Gunga, your suggestion is the best therapy I can imagine....too bad it isn't feasible for most of us.  Appreciate the suggestion anyway.:smileyhappy:

I'm pretty sure I have it, but never had a diagnosis.  I hate waking up when it's still dark out and getting off work when it's dark out.  The cold weather kills my joints and since I can't wear coats I freeze myself whenever I go out.  I need to get out of PA!

No depression allowed for Fiordispina, I have hope we can beat this happy thief, out of our lives. Jump up run in loops and yell very loud until you feel like a fool :smileysurprised:then take a shower and sing. Drity drinking dittys are best :smileywink:, if you have to make up one. After an hour of crazy actions you will be clean and once again your sweet self.   Good luck kiddo  OAD:smileytongue:
