Wow....sad day for baseball. Kalas and Fidrych. My favorite night growing up was Monday, just waiting for Monday night baseball to come on and I will never forget the gem he threw as a rookie.

That is so sad. My father was from Denmark and didn't know anything about baseball but he loved to watch The Bird. He was a real character. Sports need more fun guys like him not the prima donnas that we are stuck with in the nba and the nfl.

I remember watching him play with Detroit when I was stationed in the U.P. What a character.

I was 18 years old in 1976 and had just graduated high school. My friends and I went to several games when The Bird pitched, and watched them all. The best way I could describe the atrmoshpere at the ballpark when he pitched was "electric".  That was the most exciting non-contender season of all time, bar none.  His antics were totally sincere never an act. But his personalaity and antics alone would never have made him a sensation unless he could actually play at a high level --- and his pitching ability that one year 1976, was superb ... going 19-9 for a bad team. If he had any suppport he would have been 24-4.  Goodbye Mark we'll never forget you......

First Adenhart and now Kalas and Fidrych. Such sad news in a matter of a little over a week. May they all be resting in peace.

Two of my all-time favorite, most entertaining pitchers, came out in the same era. The Mad Hungarian, Al Hrabosky, and Fidrych. Though neither ever played for my Phillies, I still searched out games on TV if there was a chance of seeing them pitch. They made baseball fun to watch.

I am saddened that we have lost one of the most entertaining players to ever walk onto a baseball diamond. It's always tough to hear of a young man passing before his time, it is even worse when it is someone that we came to know by watching them on the field or the TV. Though my knowledge of the Bird came only through the lens of a TV camera, he is a part of my past. And now a part of my past is gone.

My condolences to the Fidrych family, and to all fans of the Tigers and of baseball. Mark is gone way too soon.
